A headline that "rainwater everywhere is unsafe to drink" is alarming — and mostly accurate. But if you want to understand what it does and doesn't mean, it helps to read the study the way a scientist would. Here is the 2022 paper that started that headline, unpacked.
What the paper actually said
Researchers compared measured levels of several PFAS in rainwater and soil, worldwide, against health-based guideline values — and found they routinely exceeded those guidelines, even in Antarctica and the Tibetan Plateau. Their framing was a "planetary boundary": a global limit we've now crossed for a class of persistent pollutants.
What "exceeds guidelines" means — and doesn't
Drinking-water advisory levels are deliberately conservative: they estimate a lifetime of daily exposure with a wide safety margin. So "rainwater exceeds the advisory" means the long-term, population-level benchmark is crossed — a real signal about persistence and accumulation. It does not mean a glass of rainwater is acutely toxic. Both things are true at once, and good reporting holds both.
The story isn't one glass of rainwater. It's that the number never goes back down.
That's the actual lesson of "forever chemicals": persistence. Because they barely break down, even small ongoing releases accumulate. That's why the policy response targets sources — including the ones in consumer products — rather than telling people to filter the sky.
