report_problem Problem Statement

Wood fibre insulation boards (WFIB) — rigid and semi-rigid thermal/acoustic panels used in passive-house building envelopes — are universally bound with pMDI (polymeric methylene diphenyl diisocyanate). pMDI is a highly effective thermosetting binder but is an isocyanate — a sensitising agent that causes occupational asthma and is subject to mandatory EU REACH worker training requirements (August 2023 diisocyanate restriction). STEICO, Gutex, Pavatex, and Homatherm all use pMDI with zero public plans to change. No commercial bio-based binder exists for WFIB at scale. CAGE's amino acid + polycarboxylic acid system is theoretically applicable — wood fibre cellulose presents accessible hydroxyl groups — but exterior moisture resistance (the most demanding performance criterion) is the primary technical challenge.

trending_up Market Size

$0.99B (2026) growing to $1.79B by 2035 (6.25% CAGR). Strong in European passive-house construction market.

gavel Regulatory Drivers

EU REACH Annex XVII — diisocyanate training mandate August 2023 (worker certification every 5 years). EU Construction Products Regulation 2024/3110 — chemical content transparency from January 2026. EU Green Deal targets drive demand for bio-based building materials.

flag Success Criteria

Compressive strength ≥30 kPa at 10% deformation (EN 826). Water absorption ≤1 kg/m² after 24hr partial immersion (EN 1609). Thermal conductivity ≤0.040 W/m·K (EN 12667). Fire: Class E minimum without additional FR treatment. Binder add-on ≤12% w/w (cost parity with pMDI target). Note: CE marking under CPR 2024/3110 requires 12-24 months third-party certification — plan timeline accordingly.

precision_manufacturing Equipment Needed

Thermomechanical refiner or pre-refined wood fibre, hot press (180°C, 2 MPa minimum), compressive strength tester (EN 826), water absorption tester (EN 1609), thermal conductivity meter (EN 12667), density measurement
