Bio-based Acrylic Crosslinking Kit
Textile Backcoating Binder
Problem Statement
Textile backcoating (applied to drapery, upholstery, and carpet backing) uses acrylic latex binders crosslinked with N-methylol acrylamide (NMA) or melamine-formaldehyde resins. NMA releases formaldehyde during crosslinking and throughout the product lifetime. Indoor textiles — curtains, sofas, carpet — are major sources of residential formaldehyde exposure. The backcoating market needs a formaldehyde-free crosslinker compatible with acrylic latex binder systems.
Market Size
$1.8B global textile backcoating/coating market
Regulatory Drivers
EPA TSCA formaldehyde emission standards for composite products. California CARB ATCM 93120 limits formaldehyde emissions. EU REACH Annex XVII. WHO Indoor Air Quality guidelines recommend <0.1 mg/m³ formaldehyde. OEKO-TEX Standard 100 limits.
Enterprise Interest
No enterprise interest recorded yet. Companies can indicate their volume and urgency to help guide research priorities.
Success Criteria
Peel adhesion ≥80% of NMA-crosslinked control. Formaldehyde emission below detection limit (<0.005 ppm). Stiffness within ±15% of NMA control. Survives 5 wash cycles without delamination.
Equipment Needed
Knife-over-roll coater or doctor blade, forced-air oven, peel adhesion tester, stiffness tester (cantilever), small chamber for VOC/formaldehyde emission testing, acrylic latex binder, fabric substrates (drapery, upholstery weight)
