report_problem Problem Statement

Lyocell (branded TENCEL by Lenzing AG), Modal, and Cupro are premium regenerated cellulose fibres marketed explicitly on sustainability credentials. TENCEL Lyocell is used by Patagonia, Eileen Fisher, H&M Conscious Collection, and hundreds of premium brands. The fundamental contradiction: sustainable fibres finished with DMDHEU (a formaldehyde-releasing carcinogen) or with Lenzing's proprietary TAHT crosslinker (not sold to finishers, creating a finishing gap). EU REACH Aug 2026 makes this contradiction commercially untenable. CAGE's food-grade amino acid + polycarboxylic acid system is the only chemistry that can claim full supply-chain cleanliness from forest to finished fabric. Strategic note: if CAGE validates on TENCEL specifically, Lenzing AG (the TENCEL brand owner) becomes a potential licensee rather than a competitor.

trending_up Market Size

$880M lyocell fibre market growing to $3.43B by 2032 (8.6% CAGR). Premium positioning enables higher margins than cotton finishing.

gavel Regulatory Drivers

EU REACH Regulation 2023/1464 — formaldehyde restriction Aug 2026. ZDHC MRSL (Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemicals) requirements from brands specifying TENCEL. Lenzing's own sustainability commitments. OEKO-TEX Class I.

flag Success Criteria

WRA ≥265° on lyocell substrate. Whiteness index ≥80 on white TENCEL. No increase in fibrillation rating vs untreated. AATCC 124 appearance rating ≥3.5. Chemistry deployable by finishers without Lenzing IP license.

precision_manufacturing Equipment Needed

Padding mangle, forced-air oven, AATCC 66 tester, whiteness meter, wet abrasion tester (for fibrillation rating), TENCEL Lyocell and Modal fabric samples
