Paper Amino-acid Crosslinked for Kraft
Kraft Bag Wet Strength
report_problem Problem Statement
Heavy-duty multiwall kraft bags (cement, flour, pet food, chemicals, seed) rely on PAE (polyamide-epichlorohydrin) resins for wet strength. PAE generates carcinogenic by-products: 1,3-DCP (H350, possible carcinogen, BfR limit 2 µg/L water extract) and 3-MCPD (H351, suspected carcinogen, BfR limit 12 µg/L). For food-contact applications — flour bags, pet food bags — these by-product limits are directly applicable and market surveillance shows >10% non-conformity. Solenis and Kemira have responded with 'G3 PAE' (reduced DCP) and 'biomass-balanced PAE' (renewable feedstock) — but both are still PAE chemistry, still produce 1,3-DCP. CAGE's amino acid + polycarboxylic acid crosslinking is the first genuinely chlorine-free, zero-AOX alternative for kraft paper wet strength.
trending_up Market Size
$4.5B multiwall sack market (4.5% CAGR). Wet strength chemicals sub-segment ~$150-200M est. Food-contact segment (flour, pet food) = highest regulatory pressure.
gavel Regulatory Drivers
EU BfR XXXVI — 1,3-DCP limit 2 µg/L and 3-MCPD limit 12 µg/L in food-contact paper water extracts. REACH scrutiny of ECH (epichlorohydrin) and its by-products. China GB standards parallel limits.
corporate_fare Enterprise Interest
No enterprise interest recorded yet. Companies can indicate their volume and urgency to help guide research priorities.
flag Success Criteria
Wet tensile index ≥20 Nm/g (equivalent to PAE-treated kraft at standard dosage). Mullen burst ≥200 kPa for 70 g/m² kraft. 1,3-DCP below BfR limit of 2 µg/L (expected: zero, as no chlorinated chemistry involved). AOX = 0 (confirmed by absence of chlorinated compounds). Repulpability: treated sheet fully repulps in water within 30 min at neutral pH.
precision_manufacturing Equipment Needed
Pulp disintegrator, handsheet former (TAPPI T205), wet tensile tester (TAPPI T456), Mullen burst tester, 1,3-DCP/3-MCPD migration test kit (or send to certified lab), pH meter, Britt jar for retention testing
