Green Regenerated Agro-fiber INnovation
Agro-Fibre Board Binder
report_problem Problem Statement
Agricultural residue boards — wheat straw boards (Stramit), rice straw boards, sugarcane bagasse boards, hemp shiv panels — offer a circular use of crop waste but face a critical chemistry problem: they require formaldehyde-based (UF) or isocyanate-based (MDI) binders. Both are under regulatory pressure — CARB Phase 2/TSCA Title VI restricts formaldehyde, EU REACH restricts isocyanates. This is the only CAGE track facing DUAL regulatory pressure on the incumbent chemistry. Wanhua EcoBoard dominates with MDI-bound wheat straw boards from China. CalPlant's $340M rice straw MDF plant went bankrupt in 2022 — a cautionary tale on capital requirements. CAGE's path: license the binder chemistry to an existing board maker, not build a plant. Key technical challenge: straw's waxy silica surface resists cellulosic crosslinkers (the same reason UF fails on straw without high loading).
trending_up Market Size
$2.0-2.1B agro-fibre boards (6.5% CAGR). EU construction market drives demand. Hemp shiv composites in automotive gaining rapidly.
gavel Regulatory Drivers
CARB Phase 2 / TSCA Title VI (formaldehyde from UF-bound boards). EU REACH diisocyanate restriction August 2023 (MDI). EU Green Deal bio-based building materials targets. EU CBE JU (Circular Bio-based Europe) funding programs confirm institutional interest.

No enterprise interest recorded yet. Companies can indicate their volume and urgency to help guide research priorities.
flag Success Criteria
Internal bond ≥0.35 MPa (P2 particleboard grade equivalent for interior applications). MOR ≥11 MPa. Formaldehyde emission: zero (CAGE chemistry produces no formaldehyde by design). Swelling after 24hr water immersion ≤12% (moisture resistance for interior use). Pre-treatment optimisation: establish minimum steam explosion conditions for straw surface activation.
precision_manufacturing Equipment Needed
Steam explosion reactor or autoclave, hot press (160-180°C, 2.5 MPa), internal bond tester (EN 319), MOR tester (EN 310), formaldehyde emission chamber (EN 717-1), wheat straw or bagasse raw material
